Fire Station Tour

Thanks to our friend for arranging a tour of the local fire station for us!

Family Reunion

We were fortunate enough to get together with Jeremy's family that had all come into town for Julie's wedding this past weekend. It was so great to connect with the aunties, uncles and cousins. One thing that stands out in this family - The matriarch, Eileen Dyer, has 12 great grandchildren, all of whom are BOYS!! And, the 13th is now underway - also a boy. Here is a picture of ten of the twelve boys who were at the reunion.

The Three Month "Switch"

Someone flipped the switch on Mitch.

Once he hit three months so many things changed for the better.

  • He is so much more alert. He keeps a watch to check out what is going on around him. His favorite thing to look at is his big brother!!
  • He smiles so much more. And not just a smile here and there...A real smile when he sees something that he likes such as a familiar face or a funny big brother!
  • He stopped being fussy every night in the evening. I am most grateful for this change.
  • He is starting to put himself on a regular schedule: two one hour naps in the morning, two one hour naps in the afternoon, down at 9, last feeding at 11, then one feeding in the middle of the night. Wakes, eats and another early morning nap. Clockwork! I like it!!! Of course now that I said that out loud, the schedule will change!
  • He is getting so big! I have to move him into the six month clothes bucket. WOW!! I should weigh him. About a month ago he was about 15 pounds.
  • He is playing more intentionally with his toys. Not just looking at them, but swatting and grabbing them, and trying to hold on to them.
  • He loves to look you right in the eye and hold on tight. I love that.
  • He is trying with all his might to sit up...it is so cute to see him try. Great stomach crunches!
I am grateful for the change. It is good news.

J-A-C-K: The Update Part II

So, it turns out Jack is getting some letters!

When his uncle Tim asked him about his letter magnets, he was able to identify several different ones!! Yeah!

He just doesn't want to share what he has learned with me...

:)

J-A-C-K: The Update

Is it ever too early to start teaching your children? Well, I guess it depends on what it is that you are trying to teach them.

Scripture: Never. Jack already has a few verses under his Belt of Truth. I am glad to continue to work on this and he even asks me sometimes, "Mama, what's our verse?" I gladly tell him.

Manners: Never. Good manners are always appreciated by others and should be expected (in my opinion) no matter what. Does Jack always comply? No! But, we never stop working on it.

Letters: Well, this one is questionable!

We started working on letter recognition with Jack. I figured he would respond well for a few reasons. First, his verbal communication and vocabulary are pretty good for a 27 month old. Second, he has managed to learn the letters W and O during the past school year. So, I thought, well, maybe he would do well learning the letters in his name at least.

As I mentioned in a post just a few below this one, I sent him the letters in his name and we began working on learning them a week at a time. Well, at the end of week three here is where we are at:

NOWHERE!!

He is so funny! When asked, "Jack, what letter does airplane start with?" He confidently replies, "Zebra!" Then he laughs and laughs. The other day he grabbed his letters and crumpled them all up. He then proceeded to tell me, with the sweetest smile on his face, that these belong in the trash can. And he followed through. :)

At this point, he enjoys getting a laugh out of mommy more than he is interested in letter recognition. And that is just fine with me. A good friend of mine and I were chatting about whether or not it was too early for him to begin to recognize letters. Perhaps. I really am not too concerned that he thinks that airplane starts with zebra or that the letters are now crumpled in the trash. I appreciate the fun and structure having a letter each week gives to our summer. I also like knowing that I am slowly giving him instruction to help him on his way to begin reading. One day it will click. No rush. Just fun.

Here is what he has learned in the middle of zebras and crumpled letters:
-He knows what letters are in general and even points them out on different things. (O and W specifically)
-He loves to take apart any and all art projects we do - a little deconstruction. I found the googley eye of the ant we made on the living room floor the other day. Poor ant!!
-Some wonderful verses. They have been a part of my list of ideas of things we can do for the week and he has taken to them well.

I would much rather have Jack know scripture than letters!

You know you are a mom to boys when...

...your son finds a worm on the ground and immediately drops everything he is doing to ensure that the worm is safely returned to his home - the dirt! Oh, and then he continues to play in the dirt - of course!
And you know that is one sweet boy when he shares the story with daddy over dinner and explains that the worm had to go home because, "He missed his mommy." Melt my heart!

J-A-C-K

This week Jack got some letters in the mail.
J-A-C-K!!

We are trying to work with him on letter recognition. Through the month of June we are working on one letter per week. This week has been "J" week. We having been finding the letter "J" just about everywhere!!
Here it is on a box of green Jello!
And here is a "J"ellyfish!

We found "J" shaped breadsticks, worked on our "Jack & Jill" nursery rhymes, read about Jesus, Jonah & Joseph, and even had a jumping contest! J is lots of fun. Next week we move on to "A" week.

Deliciousness!!

Delicious to the eye that is!!
These are the "Dancing Butterfly" variation of the peony.
Aren't they gorgeous???
I took a little time yesterday to cut them from the garden and bring this delight inside. I also added some of my "Miss Kim" lilacs to the bunch. The smell is incredible!
Enjoy!
